Alec Baldwin Responds to News of Halyna Hutchins Death in Video Released by Officials

The moment Alec Baldwin learned that Halyna Hutchins died is captured in the… Rust shooting research material released this week.

The 64-year-old actor, who was rehearsing a scene for the film when he said he cocked the vintage Colt revolver and it went off, covered his mouth in shock after being shot by detectives at the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office on 21 Oct. had said that the cameraman succumbed to her injuries.

“New!” said Baldwin, pushing back his chair and putting a hand over his mouth.

The star, who happily agreed to be interviewed by authorities and read his Miranda rights after the shooting, sat there stunned when detectives told him director Joel Souza, who was hit by the projectile after it left Hutchins, was still was in the hospital, ” but [Hutchins] didn’t make it.”

Baldwin was seemingly frozen.

“I didn’t want you to hear it out here,” Detective Hancock said as Baldwin placed his hand on his chest, then on his head. When asked what they could do for him, Baldwin said he wanted to call his wife Hilaria.

In other interview footage, Baldwin was shown the projectile taken from Souza’s shoulder and replied, “That’s a bullet… Someone put a bullet in the gun” versus dummy bullets.

“I’m getting so sick of this,” he said. “That a bullet went through this girl’s body. And she’s currently in critical condition in the hospital and I fired the gun. And don’t you think I feel really bad about that? I do.”

Baldwin also said several times that gun master Hannah Gutierrez Reed handed him the gun prior to accidental firing. However, in other interviews, he said that assistant director David Halls gave him the gun.

Other videos, released Monday by the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office, showed Baldwin at the Bonanza Creek Ranch in the wake of the accidental shooting. He was photographed by detectives in his film wardrobe. They also took pictures of his hands.

Although he said he was not doing well, he worked with researchers.

“I’m happy to stay here and do whatever you need,” he told a deputy sheriff in one clip. “My hands are shaking.”

At another point, he was told they wanted to interview him and arm Gutierrez Reed in their office. He replied, “Just tell me what to do. Just tell me what to do.”

Another video showed Baldwin and other crew members being made aware of Hutchins’ gunshot wound, and how she was hit in the chest and the projectile went through the body and exited her rear left shoulder blade. It then hit Souza. Baldwin asked questions while others wept openly.

There was further bodycam footage of Baldwin explaining to investigators how he turned and cocked the gun and it “goes off. It would be a cold gun. Nothing. No flash charges, nothing.” He said it was “a puzzle for me, and it makes me very emotional right now.”

Baldwin’s attorney, Luke Nikas, said Baldwin welcomed the investigation and the new disclosures show he acted responsibly.

However, some experts say it could work against him.

“The video showing Alec Baldwin being interviewed by the sheriff’s investigators is Exhibit A as to why anyone who talks to law enforcement about their actions should have an attorney, even if the person doesn’t think they can be held liable. LA personal injury attorney Miguel Custodio, of Custodio and Dubey, tells Yahoo Entertainment.[He] made a lot of casual mistakes in that initial interview with investigators and the plaintiff’s attorneys will have a field day with all his false statements,” including that Gutierrez Reed handed him the gun. “It’s not looking good for him.”

To date, no criminal charges have been filed — although Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza said on Tuesday that no one is “off the hook.” Authorities are awaiting FBI analysis of the gun, projectile and other ammunition found on the set. Baldwin’s phone records have yet to be analyzed as there was a delay in returning the phone.

Former federal prosecutor Neama Rahmani, of West Coast Trial Lawyers, tells Yahoo Entertainment that phone records remain an important part of this investigation.

“Prosecutors can still make a decision on whether or not to file criminal charges, even without ballistics forensics or fingerprint analysis, because those issues are not up for debate,” Rahmani said. “It’s really the cell phone records and the possibility of a smoking gun in a text that get in the way of the investigation and the decision on whether or not to press charges.”

Baldwin, also a producer on the film, has been the target of multiple lawsuits, including one filed by Hutchins’ family.

LA criminal defense attorney Joshua Ritter, with Werksman Jackson & Quinn, thinks this evidence dump against the star will work in those civil cases.

“Unfortunately for Baldwin, his outlook continues to obscure as details of a chaotic set with few security measures come to light,” he says. “Things are going from bad to worse for him in all the civil lawsuits he faces.”

Last week, the Rust manufacturing company was fined up to $136,793 by New Mexico for the deadly shooting, citing “several management errors and more than enough evidence to suggest that as industry standard practices were followed… [the tragedy] wouldn’t have happened.”
