From 13 to 15 May, the Porto Marinho district of the municipality of Cantagalo, Rio de Janeiro, Dwarf Rice Harvest Festival. The purpose of the event is not to celebrate the grain production that is characteristic of this region on the banks of the Paraiba do Sul River, but rather to promote this grain variety, which is still little known even to neighboring communities. For this, Senac RJ, in partnership with the municipality of Cantagalo, has prepared a program of workshops and demonstration classes that will address the importance and gastronomic potential of this rice for local cuisine. An experience tourism action will also be held in partnership with Sesc RJ. The event also marks the launch of Editora Senac Rio’s book “So Pleasure, Mother Arroz”.

“At the Harvest Festival, we will present to visitors the Cantagalo, Porto Marinho region and visitors the result of the study developed at weekly meetings held virtually during the pandemic by a group of individuals and institutions, and then product testing at the Research and Research Center. The Arroz Main project at Senac RJ is coordinated by chef Osvaldo Gorski. Senac RJ’s program at the Harvest Festival begins Friday, 13.05 in Cantagalo with a workshop for lunch ladies from schools in the area. The aim is to introduce cooks to the product, which may soon be included in the municipal school menu. Participants will learn how to use Dwarf Rice in savory recipes, the preparation of desserts and even snacks.
On Saturday, 05/14, the public and free party takes place in Porto Marinho in a tent set up by the town hall. At 2 pm, chef Teresa Corção introduces a demonstration class to showcase the versatility of cereal in preparing savory and sweet recipes. Participants will learn to prepare Dwarf Rice Salad and Rice Manjar with Guava syrup. Shortly after, at 15:30 there will be the cultural folkloric presentation Mineiro Pau, and from 17:00 the forró show Meu Xodó with artist André Bussinger. The presentation is supported by companies and non-governmental organizations from Cantagalo.
Using pygmy rice already on the menu at Quintal Restobar, her restaurant in Santo Antônio de Pádua, Ecochef Carol De Cnop will be presenting a special recipe – pygmy rice with grilled vegetables with aioli – at her Venda Antiga restaurant in Porto Marinho.
That day Sesc Nova Friburgo Social Tourism also organized a visit to Porto Marinho with a program centered on dwarf rice. The group will leave Nova Friburgo at 8:30 am and will be greeted at 10:30 by the Manufacturers’ Association with a presentation on local history. Lunch at 12 o’clock will also include cereal as a highlight of the menu. Then visitors participate in the Harvest Festival programs.
On Sunday, May 15, the Harvest Festival returns to Cantagalo, where Teresa Corção gives a new show class at 10:00 am in the auditorium of the Fraterno Auxílio Cristão (FAC). Participants will be able to learn how to prepare Beet Risotto and Indian Sweet Rice. The program is free and open to the public.
In both Porto Marinho and Cantagalo there will be the launch of Editora Senac Rio’s “Very Enjoyable Arroz Anã” edited by chef Teresa Corção. The publication presents the results of research conducted by Grupo e Pesquisa e Inovação na Cozinha do Senac RJ over a year on dwarf rice from Porto Marinho. The book provides more information on the origins and characteristics of this grain, the growing process, and the importance of this dish to the local culture. It also records the traditional recipes of the Porto Marinho population and offers innovative suggestions for using the cereal in sweet and savory dishes. In addition to classic options such as Arroz Doce de Porto Marinho, innovations such as jollof rice, beetroot risotto and vegan milk are produced with local rice varieties.

Dwarf Rice from Porto Marinho
Known for its unique flavor, it comes from family farming and is grown by the riverside community without the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers. The grain is similar to Japanese rice but has slightly smaller grains. It is highly appreciated by local people and visitors with its different cooking technique and unique consistency, aroma and taste.
The main rice has gained importance as a strong identity element and foundation of the local cuisine, and it now claims to have acquired the Geographical Indication (GI), a tool that values the productive tradition of a particular product line tied to particular regions. . The project from Sebrae Rio receives the support of Senac RJ, who aims to contribute to the appreciation of the Porto Marinho region, especially in Gastronomy and Tourism. The aim is to contribute to the development of the local community through income generation, vocational training and tourist attraction.
