Example Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder’s Revenge: The Best Ninja Turtles Video Game Ever Made?
The ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ fever that hit the 90s could strike the world again in 2022. New York City’s most rambunctious teens are back in action to face their nemesis once again. Does the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge video game live up to the myth?
An authentic adventure
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is the new adaptation of a franchise that emerged from the “indie comics” atmosphere in 1984. In particular, Tribute Games focuses on the first animated series that aired in 1987, which ran for a total of 10 seasons until 1996. The Canadian studios therefore take the colorful universe, aesthetics, tone and designs of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Scale Knights and turn them into a video game. One thing is for sure… The artists working on this project are unconditional fans of the anime and you can feel it from the very first minutes.
Shredder’s Revenge Begins With a cover of the generic cult created by the group’s lead singer Faith No More “Mike Patton” in English and in English only. Fans of the French version will have to settle for the VO. Despite this minor disappointment, the work put into both the 2D animation of the opening and the musical composition is to be applauded. The publisher DotEmu has also offered the official English voices of the original series. Still no VF, but the desire to look up the atmosphere of the 90s is definitely present. To ensure optimal comfort, the game is subtitled in French (VOSFT).
This Beat’em All is part of the animated series chronology and is “officially” part of the lore without being placed exactly between the events. Shredder’s Revenge highlights the iconic characters of the saga during an adventure in the heart of New York City. Over fifteen levels and about twenty bosses, the Ninja Turtles try to thwart the plans of Shredder and his henchmen, but that’s not all. Tribute Games gleefully draws from a rich and colorful universe to offer fans a 100% new adventure. Praised be the holy Marshmallow and Pepperoni pizza!
A tribute in pixel art
TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge is about authenticity, and it shows in every way, starting with the pixel art direction that is heavily inspired by the source material. Visually, the title developed by Tribute Games is a colorful and nervous gem that is animated by hand. The result deserves the attention to detail. Whether it’s the sets, the characters and the special effects, everything is taken care of down to the last detail. The performers pay tribute to the ’87 series as they recapture a universe they’ve loved for years.
The title is still in development, we will be careful not to make a final judgment on the technical aspect of the title. However, the studio’s promises should appeal to Beat’em All aficionados with 60 dynamic frames per second (depending on the machine) and 1080p resolution† As a reminder, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge will be released in 2022 on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, as well as PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S thanks to compatibility within the respective ecosystems of Sony and Microsoft.
De l’action old school
The fun experience of Tribute Games is based on a once popular genre… Beat’em All. This genre has taken on new colors in recent years, especially with the hard hitting Streets of Rage 4, also published by DotEmu. The world is small. Anyway, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge differs from its model with its ultra-dynamic approach and the “Team vs ALL” philosophy that flows from it. The gameplay remains firmly anchored in the past, which does not disappoint us, but mainly relies on rhythmic and accessible combat.
These clashes can tempt both licensed fans eager to find their favorite heroes and fighting enthusiasts eager to get into battle. The New York teens spin around the screen, chaining devastating attacks and teaming up to defeat a bestiary that is regularly refreshed. TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge features a roster of six fighters (Leonardo, Donatello Michelangelo, Raphael, Splinter, and April O’Neil) with specific attributes and skills. The absence of the troublemaker decked out in a Casey Jones hockey mask is worth mentioning, which might disappoint some.
Fully playable solo or with others (from 1 to 4 players), Shredder’s Revenge is best played in co-op. The Arcade mode, inspired by the terminals of yore, and the Story mode, which includes a few scattered RPG elements, are available entirely online, locally, or a mix of both. You are even allowed to disembark in the middle of a fight. Tribute Games therefore focuses on the cooperative experience at the expense of multiplayer versus. There is currently no competitive mode planned.
TMNT fans, get ready! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are definitely back in 2022, and it’s clearly not for knitting. Tribute Games studios pays a lively tribute to an animated series that left its mark on an era, the 90s. This Beat’em All hits hard and accurately, both through its beautiful 2D visuals and its energetic desire. Shredder’s revenge promises to be unforgettable. It remains to be seen whether this neo-retro trip will pass the ultimate test flawlessly… that of the “street”.
