‘The aftermath of ‘The Voice’ is quite shocking’

INTERVIEW – During the Super Cross Battles, the last leg before the live broadcast this Saturday on TF1, the singer led by Vianney made a bet to perform a title by Florent Pagny. If the key stakeholder welcomed the performance, the public vote did not allow him to qualify.

TikTok Boom. A video on the TikTok platform and 2.3 million views later, Gautier passes the castings for “The Voice”. A blessing to this young man from Nancy who dropped out of medical school in 2020 to attend a music school. of a personality “very sensitive”, as he describes himself, the singer had to fight the stress of his blind audition. His very “soulful” interpretation of the song A song for you by Donny Hathaway three coaches turned around. Obviously, he’s joining the Vianney team, which… “immediately surrounded”

On the stages, Gautier experiences a musical adventure in which each song conveys a message. This Saturday, hoping to get live entry, the candidate bet on emotion with Know how to love by Florent Pagny. A highlight that touched the original artist. Unfortunately, if Vianney judged that his talent had just delivered his best performance, the latter lost to his friend Nour. Not without nostalgia Gautier takes stock of this important experience.

LE FIGARO. – What memory do you keep from these Super Cross Battles?
Gautier. † I experienced this evening with exactly the same stress as with the Cross Battles, but especially with less self-confidence. The day before the bonus we changed my entire performance at the last minute, the arrangement, the tone and even the choreography… This turnaround put a lot of pressure on me but thanks to a lot of work everything went well.

Why did you choose to interpret the title? Know how to love
I had to choose a title in French. that’s what i found Know how to love was a good continuation of my career in “The Voice”. On a personal level, the Super Cross Battles fell on the same day as my mother’s birthday. It was important for me to dedicate this song to him with the following message: if you know how to love, you know how to do everything.

Was it extra pressure to sing for Florent Pagny?
I was well aware of the risks, but the message could only be better. Once on the podium I didn’t feel that pressure anymore. When I interpret a title, I always try to appropriate it and deliver a personal version. At the end of my performance, Florent Pagny really felt like I was telling him a story with my emotion. Even if I didn’t go live, the challenge was successful. It’s not just a defeat (laughs)

What was your reaction when you heard that Nour would be your opponent?
We didn’t want to bump into each other, because we get along very well. If we were face to face, we wouldn’t be living together. In a way, when I knew I was up against Nour, I knew I had lost.

Why were you persuaded to leave the adventure?
In “The Voice” we quickly learn that song choice matters a lot. Nour has chosen Live for the best by Johnny Hallyday. His performance was incredible: the interpretation of the text, his voice, his technique, his emotion…. I felt very small next to it! In order not to get completely lost, I said to myself: “You are there to sing, at all costs… Show what you can, even if it is your last performance”.

“I consider Vianney a bit like a father”

How did you live with your elimination?

I was very happy for Nour without realizing that I was leaving the adventure. The after “The Voice” is quite shocking, like a big adrenaline rush. From one day to the next and in a very brutal way we go from dream to everyday life. I had a little trouble getting over it.

During this evening we see you overwhelmed with emotion… What do you feel at that moment?
My emotional breakdown begins when Vianney brings up my mother’s birthday. I was very afraid of disappointing my relatives, calling them and not being able to tell them I was going to live. At the same time, I also understand that it is about saying goodbye to Vianney, the talents. We are like a small family. In fact, I was very attached to the set, I wanted to sing over and over.

During the adventure you often mentioned your stress…
Frankly, I felt different kinds of stress. Before my blind audition, I had a lump in my stomach, an urge to cry for fear no one would turn around. Going from step to step gives rise to another form of stress, that of leaving. I gained confidence, my desire to sing in front of an audience and with musicians could also create fear of missing out… Fortunately Vianney helped me channel these fears.

What memories do you keep from your coaching sessions with Vianney?
Vianney is a great coach. I consider him a bit like a father. He immediately recognized what kind of person I was and my lack of self-confidence. Vianney supported me every step of the way, reassuring me, whether I was going on stage or even after a performance. I will always remember one of his sentences after the Cross Battles where he asked me to say loud and clear, “I was home”. He does not let go and plays his role as a coach thoroughly.

What is your assessment of your career in “The Voice”?
I have no regrets. I am super proud of my journey. The adventure allowed me to discover other facets of my voice and advocate for emotions, such as during the Cross Battles titled John Lennon, Introduce.

‘After stopping medication, I secretly enrolled in a music school’

What role does your mother play in your musical career?
My mother follows me closely, but has no real influence on my career. We have a real relationship of trust, I take care of myself and she doesn’t interfere. When I make mistakes, his role is to let me learn at my own pace. She supports me in the best way.

You finished your medical studies, what was the reason?
My mother works in the medical world, I’ve always been somewhat immersed in that. After the baccalaureate degree, I started PACES (first year common for health studies, editor’s note.) to get a job in security. I never thought I would have the potential to start a musical career. I don’t thrive in medicine. I understood that I had to immerse myself in the music and dedicate an important place to it.

A video on TikTok revealed to you, how did it propel you to “The Voice”?
After this click, I secretly enrolled in a music school. To pay for this new education, I worked as a computer order picker and started on TikTok at the same time. A month before joining the MAI, Nancy’s Music Academy International, I posted a video of me singing to my mother. It now has over 2.3 million views and “The Voice” saw me. After trying last season’s castings, we decided that I would be technically done with a year of music school. A year later, as promised, they contacted me again for this 11th season.

Looking back, was it wise to wait another year?
Yes! Honestly, I’m really glad I made this switch in school. I wouldn’t have gone that far in the adventure. I needed training this year to grow up. To make “The Voice” you need to have the mind and the vocal technique.

What are your plans for the future?
On the advice of Bruno Berbères (casting director of “The Voice”) I will soon be casting for a musical. I am also working with musicians on a possible future EP or album. In addition, I maintain my social networks a lot to expand my community. Thanks to “The Voice” my followers on TikTok and Instagram are growing. It touches me that some people are disappointed to see me leave tonight. It makes me happy because even after my defeat I feel that they will still support me in my future projects. As my mother says: “It is my destiny, the path is marked, I must move forward alone”.
