The first spectators of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness gave their opinion and it looks like the horror will be there.
The character of Stephen Strange, first introduced in 2016 in Doctor Strange, has become one of the MCU’s most iconic and important heroes. Benedict Cumberbatch later portrayed the character in Thor: Ragnarokthe first two avengers and in the recent Spider-Man: No Way Homewhose impressive numbers at the box office give hope for an equally triumphant return of the Doctor to the cinema.
In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of MadnessStrange will not be alone. Indeed, he will be joined by Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen), Wong (Benedict Wong), but also America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez), a new heroine who can travel between dimensions. Critics who had a chance to discover the film before everyone else flooded Twitter with their opinions, so we’ve grouped several tweets together that are representative of the overall opinion.
Cardboard square for Doctor Strange?
By far the creepiest, craziest, craziest, most terrifying and terrifying Marvel movie, #MultiverseOfMadness definitely brings the horror vibes of Sam Raimi, and I loved that. Danny Elfman’s music fits the film’s weird, mysterious tone perfectly and Elizabeth Olsen is MVP, imo pic.twitter.com/R5Ybhnd4rl

“By far the scariest, most complex, goofy, terrifying and terrifying Marvel movie ever, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness appeals to the horror atmosphere specific to Sam Raimi, which is what I really liked. Danny Elfman’s music fits perfectly with the strange and mysterious tone of the film and Elizabeth Olsen is the best element in my opinion.” Erik Davis – Rotten Tomatoes
#MultiverseofMadness is a ride from start to finish. A little rushed in places but it has the iconic wild Sam Raimi vibe. No surprise, but Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch is a force and she surprises at every turn as she builds on everything she’s done in the MCU so far pic.twitter.com/AW9yIPj9ME

†Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is a roller coaster ride from start to finish. It’s a little rushed at times, but it has Sam Raimi’s signature wild tone. Unsurprisingly, Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch is a force who manages to regularly surprise thanks to all she’s accomplished in the MCU so far.” Nora Dominick – BuzzFeed
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is the weirdest, grossest Marvel movie yet. It’s wildly disjointed, partly on purpose, so it doesn’t always work, but the horror, and especially Wanda, work incredibly well. Plus wow. What a huge surprise. pic.twitter.com/HwZUZ4Nygw

†Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is the strangest and densest Marvel movie to date. The film is extremely disjointed, partly on purpose, which doesn’t always work, but the horror, and especially Wanda, works beautifully. And wow, what a huge surprise.” Germain Lussier
Wanda, best element of the movie?
Don’t worry, Sam Raimi fans. DOCTOR ALIEN IN THE MULTIVERSE OF INSANE is all about horror – jump scare, body horror and a few fiendish kills. It fits the MCU, but has Raimi’s deranged creepy campy groovy DNA all over it. Start the Elizabeth Olsen Oscar campaign. pic.twitter.com/jIVheGQfoY

“Sam Raimi fans are not worried. Doctor Strange: Into the Multiverse of Madness plunge headlong into horror – there are jump scares, body horror and a whole host of diabolical murders. The images fit the codes of the MCU, but still have the sensational, deranged, creepy and slightly campy DNA of Sam Raimi. Start the petition to give Elizabeth Olsen her Oscar. † Karl Delossantos – Smashcut Reviews
#DoctorWeird is filled with wildly entertaining sequences, character-driven weight, and kaleidoscopic, trippy visuals. Xochitl Gomez is a scene stealer. Elizabeth Olsen owns. Benedict Cumberbatch, wonderful. Doubles up as a good starting point for Beginners Horror. Has Raimi signature. pic.twitter.com/0S6tF9dP9h

†Doctor Strange is filled with incredibly entertaining sequences, real character-driven storytelling, and trippy, kaleidoscopic imagery. Xochitl Gomez steals the show. Elizabeth Olsen wins. Benedict Cumberbatch is amazing. And it’s also a great starting point for those who want to play horror. The images bear the signature of Sam Raimi.” Courtney Howard – Variety
#DoctorWeird: MARVEL MADE A HORROR MOVIE! It’s weird, scary and deserves the title ‘Multiverse of Madness’. If you were already worried that this movie Sam Raimi wouldn’t feel enough, fear not! I can’t imagine a more Sam Raimi MCU movie. My genre-loving heart is now bursting. pic.twitter.com/9we5vMpXhy

“Doctor Strange: MARVEL HAS MADE A HORROR MOVIE! It’s bizarre, creepy and frankly, it deserves the subtitle ‘Multiverse of Madness’. If you’re worried this movie doesn’t look like a Sam Raimi movie, don’t worry! I couldn’t imagine an MCU movie that was more of Sam Raimi. My little love heart for genre movies is exploding.” Perri Nemiroff – Collider
A real visual trip
#DoctorWeird #MultiverseOfMadness is a spectacle, but this mid-table Marvel is a mixed bag. The sequel, which kicks off the summer movie season, delivers rich visuals and a pretzel-like story, with some nice surprises. Raimi embracing his horror roots is welcome and a bold win. pic.twitter.com/E7PpUY0NJ3

†Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is spectacular, but this Marvel intermission is uneven. As the summer season kicks in, the sequel deploys rich visuals and an intertwined story, with some fun surprises. It is welcome and daring to see Raimi embrace his gruesome roots.” Simon Thompson – Variety
#DoctorWeird is totally insane and insane. It’s 100% a Sam Raimi movie (which is highly rated), easily the scariest MCU entry yet. Know as little as possible. Your journey to the multiverse will be much more enjoyable. † pic.twitter.com/YgbMhi1k3e

†Doctor Strange is utterly insane and insane. It’s 100% a Sam Raimi movie (which is more than noticeable) and by far the scariest MCU movie yet. Go see it and know as little as possible, your adventure in the multiverse will be all the more fun.” Drew Taylor – The Wrap
DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS was a disappointing entry into the MCU for me. Sam Raimi’s love of horror and imaginative camera work are there, but they often clash with Marvel’s safe style. Many disappointing writing decisions are likely to divide the fandom. pic.twitter.com/drm22GEpWt

†Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is for me a disappointing chapter of the MCU. Sam Raimi’s love of horror and imaginative camera work are there, but they often clash with Marvel’s formatting style. Lots of writing choices will divide fans.” Matt Neglia – Next Best Picture
Doctor Strange determined to scare young and old
All these opinions tend towards a strong idea: Doctor Strange 2 becomes a horror movie, or rather a superhero movie dotted with horrific sequences. Sam Raimi’s touch seems to have had little effect and as Taika Waititi for Thor: Ragnarok, the director could be the best reason to go see this new MCU movie, which seems very different from the others, if these tweets are to be believed. So the filmmaker could have kept his DNA.
Filled with surprises, which will remain secret until the embargo is lifted, this new single-player (but not too many) adventure from Doctor Strange could be visually rewarding thanks to bold sequences. Nevertheless, multiverse forces, the movie could be quite disjointed and lack a screenplay unit. To know if Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be the best of the MCU movies, See you in French cinemas from May 4th†
